Wheelchair Football Kicks Off in Colorado
Colorado Wheelchair Sports Association (CWS) is coordinating the first-ever organized wheelchair football program in Colorado. Although the sport has been played for over the past 20 years in other parts of the country – particularly in the west, it has never been developed locally until this year. The program kicks off this Sunday at 10 am at an undisclosed location and will feature wheelchair athletes from all over the Denver metro region.
Wheelchair football follows the same rules as 6 on 6 flag football – expect for the flag as two-hand touch is incorporated in the wheelchair version. Other rules that are geared toward the wheelchair exist.
The field is played on black top such as an abandoned parking lot and measures 60 yards from goal line to goal line and 25 yard wide. Touchdowns are awarded 6 points and 1 point for an extra point if it is passed and 2 points for a run.
The program is seeking players, volunteers and coaches who want to be a part of this exciting adaptive form of football. For more information, visit the CWS website at: www.coloradowheelchairsports.org
